Starting Your Record Collection

Looking to kick-start your record collection? Buying vinyl and building a collection can be such a fun process. It can also be overwhelming knowing where to even begin, so here are some tips and recommendations for a first-time record collector.

  1. Turntables

Doing research is a great place to start. You don’t have to go out and get the most expensive set-up, but a good quality turntable can be worth the investment. This will insure that your records stay in pristine condition. Things like cheap needles and bad counterweight of the tonearm resting on the vinyl can cause damage in the long-run. The good news is you can find used turntables in great conditions if you take the time to search for them.

  2. Record Stores

This next part is fun. It’s time to shop for some albums! The best advice would be to go explore as many places as possible. There is nothing like discovering a new favorite record store and seeing what treasures they hold. If you have the ability to travel, try to find some independent record stores. Then get to browsing. Even if you already have some albums in mind, take your time looking in other areas. You never know what you are going to find.

    3. Set-Up

Now it’s time to create the perfect set-up. You’ll want to make sure you have a stable place to set your turntable and speakers, and a storage area for your records. No fancy shelving required, as long as your records are stored upright and not stacked on top of each other. When it comes to tools, it is smart to purchase a couple of items for upkeep. Try to always have on hand some needles to replace the old one and a record cleaner. Both of these things are going to help your vinyl records stay in the best condition possible.

    4. Make A List

Compile a list of your favorite albums and go from there. You of course want to have your top albums in your library, but one of the most exciting parts of starting a collection is discovering new records. Below are some essentials that can be the perfect start to your collection.
